Refugee Camps and Resettlement

Caceelia was born in Chumphon, Thailand, in 1991. Her family moved to Mawker refugee camp in 1992 and Maneeloy refugee camp in 1999. Her family was resettled to St. Paul, Minnesota in 2001.

Saengmany tells the story of how his family became refugees after the civil war in Laos and the lengthy process of refugee resettlement they experienced in order to come to the United States in 1986. He reflects on the absence of stories like his in the history he learned in school.

Enna was born in Sa La refugee camp in Thailand in 1999. In 2002, they moved to Mae La Oon refugee camp that is also in Thailand. In 2010, her family applied to be relocated to the United States, were accepted, and left in 2011.

Wise was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1989. He talks about his family leaving Somalia in 1991 to escape the civil war, and how they lived in refugee camps in Kenya for 21 years. In 2012, he moved to the U.S. with the help of the UNHCR.
