Walk-in Multimedia Lab & Student Lounge

About

The Language Center Multimedia Lab and Student Lounge is a walk-in space for students, located at 135 Jones Hall. It offers both Windows and Mac computers, as well as spaces for students to connect and print from a personal device. Students can use small Zoom Rooms connected to or close to the lab for conference or to work in a group. The room can be also be reserved for conversation groups and other special events. The space does not have an attendance on duty, but Language Center staff at the main office front desk across the hall in Jones 110 are available to help. 

Lab Features

  • Two lounge areas to relax, work, study, read, or watch multilingual video programming
  • A "bar" where laptop and tablet users can work, charge their computers, and print directly to the Lab's laser printer
  • Six-sided worktables ideal for group work with Windows and Mac computers
  • Headsets with microphones and webcams installed at each computer to facilitate audio and video activities
  • A handicapped accessible desk, adjusts at the push of a button to a standing desk
  • An attached reservable Zoom Room for collaboration or conferencing, and a second Zoom Room close by

Note: Students taking their Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) can enter the Testing Office 137A, through the Multimedia Lab, 135.

Printing

Printing is available at a cost of ten cents per page, either single or double-sided. Payment is through the Gopher Gold system. Students can add value to their U cards by using a Value Port or online. Color printing is not available.

Print from Your Laptop 

Campus Cloud Printing simplifies printing from personal devices for lab patrons. Anyone with a UMN Internet ID can upload printouts to http://z.umn.edu/cloudprint, swipe their UCards at the lab's print station, locate the upload, and print. Uploads can be submitted from any device that can connect to a browser. Please note that if you are connecting from off-campus, A VPN connection is required to initiate a print through Cloud Printing, and the prints must be picked up in Jones 135. 

Patrons can also download installers and instructions to enable you to print from your own laptop to an LC printer. Available for Windows or Mac computers.

Reservations

Although the lab is intended as primarily a walk-in space for students, it may also be reserved for conversation and reading groups, and other special events. The event must include or directly benefit students. Please submit a reservation request at least a week in advance. When the space is closed for events, staff in Jones 110 can help students find an alternate location to work or study.
