Career Coaching Appointments
Appointments are typically 30 minutes and must be scheduled in advance online (at least 24 hours).
Types of Career Coaching Appointments:
- Tailoring a resume or cover letter
- Identifying your strengths and interests as they relate to major and career exploration
- Internship and job search strategy
- Interview preparation
- Networking with CLA alumni and employers
- Graduate and Professional school planning
- Personal statement support
For CLA Alumni
Career Coaching services are designed for currently enrolled CLA undergraduate students and available to CLA alumni up to one year after graduation. If you’re a CLA graduate more than one year out from graduation, please visit the For Alumni page for an overview of CLA career resources and community resources that are accessible to you post-graduation.

Career Coaches will meet you where you are at. While it is not required, you are encouraged to review the content in the CLA Career Guide related to the topic/s you'd like to discuss.
Arrive to your Appointment
- In Person: Check in at the front desk of CLA Career Services, 411 Bruininks Hall. If you have a document you would like reviewed, feel free to bring a hard copy or your laptop to review it on.
- Virtual: Click the Zoom link in your appointment reminder email.
- Phone: Respond to your appointment reminder email in advance and provide your coach with the phone number you'd like them to reach you at.
If you need to reschedule, change the modality of your appointment, or cancel your appointment you can do so through the online scheduling portal, call 612-626-6574, or email [email protected]. We ask that you give as much notice as possible to open up the appointment slot for another student.
Please note that any student who cancels or does not show up for an appointment three or more times with less than 24 hours notice will need to meet with the Associate Director of Career Coaching and Student Engagement prior to being allowed to schedule further appointments.
No, Career Coaches and Peer Coaches are not confidential resources. While generally the conversations that take place during coaching appointments and Peer Coach-led conversations will be kept private, there are situations where staff have an obligation to report concerns.
A Career Coach or Peer Coach will make a referral to the UMN Care Team or another campus resource if they have concerns about your well-being or safety, or the safety of another individual.
During your appointment, if you choose to write or speak about having survived sexualized violence, including rape, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, federal and state education laws require that we must notify the U of M’s Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action office.
Need Support? UMN Students may access Boynton Mental Health Services or refer themselves to the UMN Care Team for support. The Aurora Center offers free and confidential services for people impacted by sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, or sexual harassment.
