Career preparation for CLA students does not happen in one interaction, one class period, or one semester. It is the culmination of many conversations, experiences, moments of reflection, small and large decisions, and steps forward.

As a faculty or staff member, you are often the first person a student will turn to for career advice. You’re an important part of the CLA student experience and their preparation for what’s next. CLA Career Services is your partner in this work. 

Resources for CLA Students

  • Handshake: Explore job and internship opportunities for UMN students. Use the search filters to narrow your search by geographic area, type of position, etc.
  • Maroon and Gold Network: Connect with current and past UMN students and faculty. Explore Projects and Job postings shared by alumni.
  • MyCareerManagement: Students answer a few questions and receive personalized suggestions for next steps for career preparation along with monthly career field-specific newsletters which highlight relevant events, jobs, and internships.
  • CLA Career Guide: Career information specifically created for CLA students including “how-to” guides, resume/cover letter samples, tips on networking, interviewing, and more.

Weaving career education into the student experience is a powerful way to ensure that all CLA students are prepared for their next steps. 

CLA Career Services partners with faculty, staff, and student leaders to provide presentations for classes, student employee teams, student organizations, and other groups. Topics vary - common themes include:

  • Job or Internship Search Strategies
  • Networking - interactive workshop

We’re happy to collaborate and consult with you to learn about your class or program goals and identify meaningful opportunities to incorporate career education, experiential learning, or professional development.

Connect Employers & Alumni with CLA Students  

You can help connect students with alumni, employers, and career opportunities. The Employer and Alumni Engagement (EAE) team in CLA Career Services is committed to ensuring broad student access to jobs, internships, and other career experiences. 

Some of the ways you and your department can partner:

  • Reach out to us to discuss alumni or employer-engaged programs including panel discussions, class speakers, career fairs, and more. Our team is experienced at supporting these opportunities and can take on tasks such as recruiting speakers, managing the logistics for alumni and employers, promoting events, and more.
  • Let us know if you’re already connecting with an alum or employer! We want to be aware of and help thank engaged alumni and friends of CLA. We can help ensure that employers reach students strategically by offering opportunities to post jobs on Handshake, attend upcoming career fairs, or table on campus. Become a CLA Career Champion

Career Champions support CLA students as they clarify their academic and career interests, develop CLA Core Competencies, learn valuable skills, and take steps to pursue their goals. Our CLA Career Champions course offers an asynchronous, virtual introduction to career development, alongside curated tools and resources to make it easier for you to support students.
