Summer Registration UpdatesRegistration for Summer 2024 will open on Thursday, February 22. Some courses might be subject to change, we recommend checking Schedule Builder for Summer term PSY courses. All psychology courses in the summer will be offered online. Any updates with course availability will be communicated through future Psych Scoop postings. Volunteer/Engagement Opportunities11. Connect with Minnesota Youth Conducting Behavioral Health ResearchThe Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair is an annual event where hundreds of middle and high school students from across Minnesota present the results of their original research to STEM professionals, gaining valuable feedback. We are currently recruiting judges for the in-person 2024 State Science and Engineering Fair at the St Paul River Centre on Friday, March 22. Click here to register as a grand award judge if you have a background in social science or the STEM field. Even undergraduate students can help as middle school judges! Each year, judges must create a new login. Judges arrive by 10 a.m. and finish their tasks by 3:30 p.m. at the earliest. Questions? Email jenhadley@mnmas.org. 12. Volunteer to Be A History Day JudgeNational History Day in Minnesota, a longstanding partnership between the Minnesota Historical Society and the College of Liberal Arts, needs judges for various regional competitions in March and State History Day which takes place at the Minneapolis Convention Center on April 20 (this event is normally hosted on the Twin Cities campus but there were some challenges to making that happen in 2024). Here is a list of the regional competitions, which include two opportunities on the Twin Cities campus and many others within the Twin Cities. Judges only need an interest in history, be able to interact with young people, have a critical eye, and be able to give constructive feedback. Resources13. The Mentor Collective ProgramThe Mentor Collective Program enriches the student experience through personalized connections with mentors. This one-on-one peer pairing ensures that students have a dedicated supporter invested in their success, someone poised to listen, inspire, assist in overcoming challenges, and identify opportunities. Students benefit from insights into academic expectations, guidance on tackling obstacles, and valuable career advice. Simultaneously, mentors expand their networks and enhance their professional and leadership skills. Students will be matched with a peer mentor based on common interests, background, academics, and/or professional aspirations. Pretty great, right? Let's TalkLet’s Talk is a program that provides informal virtual and in-person drop-in consultations for U of M students throughout the academic year. No appointment is necessary, so you can drop in during the scheduled times. Let’s Talk is not a substitute for formal counseling and does not constitute mental health treatment, but counselors can listen to specific problems, provide support, help explore solutions, and give information about other resources. Let's Talk is not designed to provide crisis support. If you are currently experiencing a mental health crisis please utilize one of these resources. Immigration Attorney Presentation: Immigrant & Non-Immigrant Visa OptionsWednesday, February 21, 2024, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm CST You are invited to join a presentation discussing the various types of employment-based visas (including H-1B) and paths to permanent residency (“green card”). The presentation will be done by a local, experienced immigration attorney, Jesse Goldfarb at the firm Nilan Johnson Lewis. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, February 21st at 11:30 am CT, and it will include a live Question-and-answer opportunity with Jesse who will be present to address your questions. International Student Career Fair Preparation WorkshopFriday, February 23, 2024, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm CST Join us Friday, February 23rd from 12 pm-1 pm CT at the International Student Career Fair Preparation Workshop in person in Bruininks room 420B. This event will feature helpful tips and information from presenters from ISSS and Career Services. All UMN international students who are attending fall career fairs are welcome to attend. Please register to indicate your attendance and receive further information. Registration is not required to join but is helpful for us to prepare the right amount of materials for attendees. Live and low-cost GRE and LSAT Prep this SpringSet of low-cost, high-quality, GRE and LSAT prep courses offered LIVE online this spring. The live online course, taught by an instructor you can interact with, is comprehensive and covers both the content and strategy of the test. These sessions cost $285 ($235 for those who qualify for aid) and payment plans are available. The course is taught by a high-scoring, expert instructor. Apply ASAP for the GRE (or LSAT) course, as there will likely be more applications than there are spaces available. APA Summer Undergraduate Psychology Experience in Research (SUPER) FellowshipsThe American Psychological Association will offer up to 25 fellowships to support college students with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion to conduct summer research in a psychological science laboratory. The purpose of this fellowship program is to promote access and equity among psychology undergraduates considering research as a career by expanding opportunities for laboratory training and mentorship to those who have not had the opportunity to access research experiences. Projects must be student-driven and supervised by a faculty member with sufficient resources to support the proposed work. APA will pay a stipend of $4,000 directly to the student and $1,000 directly to the student’s summer faculty host. Stipends are intended to defray personal expenses (e.g., housing, travel) and APA will not provide funds for study expenses, indirect costs, or overhead. UC Irvine Psychological Science Post-Bacc Program - Application OpenThe Department of Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for their post-baccalaureate program; the deadline to apply for Fall 2024 is April 15, 2024, for domestic students (February 15, 2024, for international students). UCI’s Post-Bacc Program in Psychological Science is a certificate program that combines psychology coursework with research and/or internship experience. It is designed for people who have a bachelor’s degree (in any discipline); who are interested in a psychology-related graduate program, career development, or career change; and who could benefit from additional coursework, research, and/or real-life work experience in psychology. Research20. *Credit or Volunteer* Research Opportunity For a Brain Training Project in Addiction - Psychiatry DepartmentThis volunteer research position will directly assist research staff at the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department. The Department is currently running research studies in the active recruitment phase. Intern responsibilities will include working with databases, verifying the accuracy of study data collected, assisting in MRI, and administering brain training sessions involving transcranial direct current stimulation. This research is under the direction of Dr. Jazmin Camchong. Research participants are patients enrolled in a treatment program for alcohol use disorder and substance use disorder. Qualified candidates must be highly motivated, able to work independently, extremely detail-oriented, and willing to develop new skills as the need arises. Excellent communication (written and oral), organizational, and interpersonal skills; comfortable using basic computer programs such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Excel, and web applications (e.g. Zoom and in-house software). Candidates must be pursuing a degree in Psychology or a related field, and be willing to commit 9-10 hours per week for a minimum of 12 months. Current research studies focus on interventional treatments for youth with depression and/or non-suicidal self-injury. Students will get hands-on experience with (1) survey administration using REDCap for data collection procedures with adolescents and parents, (2) interview assessments, (3) data entry, (4) literature reviews, etc. They will also attend a 1 hr biweekly Zoom lab meeting. Candidates must be pursuing a psych or a related degree and be willing to commit 4 hours per week for summer, including some weekday evenings and weekend mornings.
