2023-2024 Mortensen Study Abroad Scholarship Recipients
The Mortensen Study Abroad Scholarship in Psychology is awarded to a psychology major studying abroad for an academic term (Summer, Fall, or Spring). This competitive scholarship includes the following criteria for selection: the student's academic performance in the Psychology major, the strength of the student's essay, and the student's integration of study abroad within their psychology major academic plan.
We are pleased to announce our two Mortensen Study Abroad 2023-2024 Recipients: Anna Sternitzky and Lizzy Schaefbauer each receiving $500 to support their studies this year. These individuals were selected by the Psychology Undergraduate Awards Committee.
This spring, I accepted a wonderful opportunity that allows me to study abroad in Florence, Italy while continuing my studies in Psychology. This program offers a class on cross-cultural psychology, one that is not offered at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and by combining this class with my four-month stay here, I look forward to coming back home with a widened perspective in the field.
Psychology is a field that should not only be studied within the confines of the four walls of a classroom, and I am so grateful to have this opportunity! By lessening the stress caused by the financial elements of my chosen program, this award will support me during my study abroad experience in Florence. I am so thankful for the award and the opportunity to have the support of my department during my studies abroad!
I have already learned so much just being here (Madrid, Spain) for only a week. I have learned how to better connect with people, even through a language barrier, and have been able to use my Spanish skills to build relationships with my professors and locals.
I am taking a psychology class about different cultures, which is very helpful and interesting to be able to speak about my current experience and use it for my schoolwork. This financial support makes it easier for me to enjoy my time here and lessens the stress of having to try to work and make money since that is not a possibility while studying abroad.
