Juan Del Toro Advocates for Supportive Measures to Address Racial Disparities in Classroom Discipline

Juan Del Toro

In recent articles by USA Today and The Hechinger ReportJuan Del Toro was quoted on the racial disparities within the classroom regarding suspensions. It has been found that Black students are suspended far more frequently compared to white students, especially for low-level offenses. Del Toro states that sometimes when people are stressed or under pressure, they don’t have the time to think through a response and then are more likely to act on racial biases. He argues that “more support for teachers could bring down the number of suspensions for low-level offenses.” With lower numbers of suspensions, academic performance can have the opportunity to thrive.

The Hechinger Report landing page is rolling out with a new story each day this week covering inequalities in education.
