As an international student, there are some specific things to think about as you consider your transfer to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UMTC):

  • Your coursework from your previous institution may be evaluated differently based on differences between your home country's educational system and the U.S. educational system. See the Transfer Credits page for more information.
  • Students attending college at UMTC typically take about 15 credits, or 4-5 classes, per semester. As an international student, you should plan on taking a full course load every semester.
  • Each student at UMTC is assigned a college advisor who will partner with you to plan your degree. You will want to meet with this person regularly throughout your time here at the UMTC.
  • You will need to arrange for visas and other entry paperwork well in advance of beginning your studies here. Please contact International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) for information on this process.
  • If you are an international student transferring from another U.S. institution, you will need to speak to ISSS about your I-20.
  • Coming to a new country can be exciting and a bit scary. Our Passport to the U allows you to hear from other international students about their transitions, things you may want to consider and what life in Minnesota is like.
