MA in Philosophy

The MA in philosophy is catered to students and professionals with a career outside of philosophy who would like to add an advanced degree in philosophy to their credentials.

Unlike many other Master of Arts (MA) programs in philosophy, ours is not a stepping stone to enter a PhD program; it is designed to have graduate level coursework and research for professionals in areas outside of philosophy. Students interested in pursuing an academic career in philosophy should apply directly to our philosophy PhD program. Those who are pursuing a PhD in another area at the University of Minnesota are ideally suited for the pursuit of our MA.

As a student in our MA program, you will choose one of two degree plans: Plan A, which involves the creation of a thesis, or Plan B, which substitutes additional course work and a project for the thesis.
