Graduate School

Making the choice to pursue further education should be a well-considered decision. As a student in CLA you build a strong academic foundation, and strengthen a set of CLA core competencies that will be assets to you in a wide range of disciplines, work settings, and professional paths. It’s important to consider, “Do I need a graduate degree to reach my goals?”

Whether you’re considering a Master’s degree, Ph.D., or a professional program (law school, medical school, etc) you will need to explore your options, understand the process, and make informed decisions about your next steps. 

Exploring Graduate School

Pursuing further education requires a substantial commitment in terms of your time, focus, and often your financial resources. Take time to reflect on your goals as you explore graduate school. 

• Why pursue graduate school or further education? Start by clarifying your own motivation or interest in further education. Are you pursuing grad school because a specific career requires it (e.g., practicing psychology, high-level policy research, academic teaching), or because you aren't sure what else to do yet?
•  What kind of program is a fit for you? Do you want a research-focused degree (M.A., M.S., Ph.D.) centered on a thesis, or a professional degree (MD, MPP, MFA, MSW) focused on applied skills and fieldwork?
• When is the right time for you to apply for graduate school? Would you benefit from going straight after senior year, or would 1–3 years of full-time work experience make you a stronger applicant and help you clarify your interests? It is common to work prior to pursuing further education. Taking a gap year to work or intern isn't "falling behind"—it's often the best way to test your career interests, save money, and build a standout personal statement.
• Who could you talk with about the possibility of graduate school? It is important to explore your plans with someone you trust! Faculty, your academic advisor, and departmental advisors are all excellent resources as you explore graduate programs related to your areas of interest. Professionals in your career field of interest and family or friends can also offer support. Make an effort to connect with key mentors or supporters early on in the graduate school exploration process.
