Major, Minor & Certificate

The Department of Writing Studies offers a BS in technical writing & communication, a minor in technical writing & communication, and a certificate in technical communication.

As a technical writing & communication major, you will combine general technical communication coursework (37 credits) with classes in one of four sub-plan areas:

  • Information technology and design
  • Biological and health sciences
  • Legal discourse and public policy
  • Environmental science

These 15-credit sub-plans were created to help you prepare for career opportunities in specific fields.

The department also offers two ways to supplement degrees outside of the Department of Writing Studies: a 16-credit minor in technical writing & communication and an 8-credit certificate in technical communication. The minor has been crafted to complement your degree program through classes that build technical writing, editing, designing presentations and visuals, and other skills that transfer to today's fast-growing communication industries. The less credit-heavy certificate, meanwhile, sharpens your skills in technical writing and communication through classes designed to teach practical skills for communicating complex technical information to a variety of audiences.
