BA in Spanish & Portuguese Studies

Students in the Spanish-Portuguese studies major learn about the language and diversity of cultures of more than 200 million Portuguese-speakers and nearly 350 million Spanish-speakers in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Portuguese courses in the combined major are interdisciplinary and emphasize the historical and cultural connections that have shaped the Lusophone world from early modernity to the present. In these courses, special attention is given to cultural and historical analogies, contrasts, and discontinuities between the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds.

Strong language abilities in Spanish, Portuguese, and English allow you to position yourself strategically in fields such as public health, international business, international law, and translation/interpretation. Together, these languages allow you to communicate with the vast majority of people in the Americas.

Other advantages of studying Spanish and Portuguese at the U are:

  • Small class sizes
  • Courses with extremely motivated students
  • Open, weekly conversation hours led by a professor
