Scholarships & Awards

A number of awards and scholarships are available for technical writing & communication students with outstanding academic achievement. Majors are encouraged to apply for the following awards and scholarships:

Awards

The Department of Writing Studies is pleased to offer two awards for excellence in technical writing and communication.

Coakley Ames Writing Excellence Award

The Coakley Ames Writing Award provides $3,000 to one student interested in improving their writing through advanced study. This award is made possible by a generous donation from the Coakley Ames family who supports improvement in student writing at the University of Minnesota.  

Victoria Mikelonis Undergraduate Memorial Fund In Scientific & Technical Communication

The Mikelonis Award offers $350 every year to an undergraduate student whose academic pursuits reflect a commitment to scientific and technical communication, rhetorical studies, and/or intercultural communication.

James and Ruth Brown Undergraduate Award

The James and Ruth Brown Undergraduate Award provides $3000 to two TWC majors each year by a generous donation from the James and Ruth Brown family. The purpose of the award is to provide financial support to undergraduate students studying rhetoric. Dr. Brown was particularly interested in enhancing reading skills to strengthen a student's ability to participate in public debate.

Scholarships

Scholarships in CLA

Students who are participating in unpaid internships are encouraged to apply for the CLA Undergraduate Internship Scholarship. These are $1,500 internship scholarships that are specifically designated for CLA undergraduate students who are currently working unpaid internships.

University of Minnesota Honors Program Scholarships

The University of Minnesota Honors Program offers several scholarships including:

  • The Harry S. Truman Scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career in public service
  • The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for students interested in pursuing a research-oriented career in math, science, or engineering
  • The Morris K. Udall Scholarship for students interested in careers related to the environment
