Major Information

Our distinguished and committed faculty serves a vibrant undergraduate community of approximately 100 majors and 20 minors, as well as hundreds of non-majors. Motivated by curiosity about the most enduring questions humans have asked, our students master not merely a body of knowledge but skills of argumentative rigor, persuasive writing, and critical and creative thinking. They subsequently gain entrance to some of the most competitive graduate and professional schools and go on to enjoy success in a diverse range of fields. Our graduates have gone on to careers as technology entrepreneurs, Federal Reserve bank examiners, physicians, professors, attorneys, and more. Learn more about the Department of Philosophy here.

All liberal arts degrees help CLA students develop their Core Career Competencies, and philosophy majors develop specific skills that are applicable to lots of different careers. These skills include:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Analytical and reasoning skills
  • Ability to formulate clear and persuasive messages
  • Listening, clarifying, questioning and responding skills
  • Creative problem-solving
