The master of arts (MA) in rhetoric and scientific & technical communication prepares students for doctoral-level research through courses and seminars in research methods, rhetoric, writing studies and pedagogies, and technical communication. Those are complemented with courses in a customizable specialty area and outside the department to ensure students complete the degree with a broad base of knowledge. The MA is a full-time, residential two-year program.

In fall of the second year, students making satisfactory progress are invited to apply to continue to the PhD program. MA courses transfer to the PhD upon admission.
