BA in Developmental Psychology
The College of Liberal Arts offers a bachelor of arts (BA) in developmental psychology that is administered through the Institute of Child Development, a premier center of scholarship, teaching, and outreach devoted to the understanding and fostering of child development. Further, students benefit from the knowledge and expertise of the number one ranked developmental psychology program in the nation (U.S. News and World Report).
Non-CLA students must first be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts.
Overview
Developmental psychology focuses on behavioral development from the prenatal period to maturity in the areas of cognition, ethology, genetics, language, learning, perception, and social behavior.
Our BA in developmental psychology provides students with a well-rounded liberal arts foundation. Combining extensive coursework in developmental psychology, a second language requirement, and a field study experience, students are prepared for diverse careers and additional training in many areas such as early childhood education, counseling, health sciences, and human service programs. Also, given fewer credits in the major, a developmental psychology BA can easily be paired with another CLA major or minor.
The second language requirement provides invaluable cultural insight and preparation for working with diverse populations after college. Students pursuing a BA can also choose to complete a minimum of one semester of field study or directed research. Completing a field study experience connects your developmental psychology courses to real-world experiences and provides you an opportunity to develop your career skills working with children.
The BA in developmental psychology is also excellent preparation for graduate school work with young people. Some common areas of further study include pediatric healthcare (MD, PT, OT, etc.), counseling and mental health, or education.
The College of Liberal Arts also offers a bachelor of science (BS) in developmental psychology as well as a minor in developmental psychology.
Transfer Guide
If you are exploring or planning to transfer to CLA, learning more about your intended major is important.
Click on the ” Full Requirements” button above to see all of the major requirements, and any limits or restrictions on certain kinds of courses or credits. Every major has a requirement of a minimum number of upper level credits or courses that must be taken through their department. Some departments also have limits to the number of 1xxx or 2xxx level courses that can count towards major requirements.
Courses to Prepare for the Major
The BA and BS Developmental Psychology majors have one introductory CPSY course that is required for both majors:
- CPSY 2301 - Introduction to Child Psychology
OR - CPSY 3301 - Introduction to Child Psychology for Social Sciences is an alternative to CPSY 2301. CPSY 3301 is intended for students who are deciding between Developmental Psychology and Psychology as a major.
Neither course has a prerequisite. CPSY 2301 or 3301 are the only prerequisites for higher level CPSY courses.
The BS Developmental Psychology major also requires PSY 1001 - Introduction to Psychology.
A grade of C- or better is required in all courses approved to satisfy major requirements.
Transferring Courses and Credits
Use Transferology to help you plan your courses for the major. Remember, when using Transferology, look for courses that transfer as direct equivalents to UMTC major courses.
Check Transferology to see if an evaluation already exists for courses you would like to use towards the major. If you find a course that has not been evaluated, you can submit an evaluation request to find out if your course is equivalent to a specific UMTC course. A copy of the course syllabus is required for the evaluation.
Declaring the Major
Transfer students must apply and be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts in order to declare a major. Check out the information on the Developmental Psychology declaration process on the Departmental website under “get started”.
BA Second Language Requirement
The BA degree does have a second language requirement. Consider completing or starting your second language before you transfer to CLA. Be sure to talk with a CLA transfer advisor about any questions.
