Scholarships & Awards

The Department of German, Scandinavian & Dutch has several scholarships and awards that are specifically for our students.

Scholarships for Majors

The Department has $3,000 scholarships for majors in our program: up to two for students with a German emphasis (the GSD Scholarship in German Studies) and up to two for students with a Scandinavian emphasis (the Mary Ann Wilson Hansen Scholarship in Scandinavian Studies). The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, with some consideration given to financial need. Priority is given to students who have not previously received our scholarships.

Interested students should review the application requirements for these scholarships.

Study Abroad Scholarships

The department has scholarships and grants for undergraduate students who will study abroad in German-speaking countries either in summer or the next academic year. There is also a scholarship for study abroad in Iceland. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, with some consideration given to financial need.

Interested students should review the application requirements for these scholarships.

Frank D. Hirschbach Scholarship for Study Abroad in a German-speaking Country
A $3,000 scholarship was established in honor of Frank D. Hirschbach, who was committed to developing and directing study abroad programs to Germany and Austria. This scholarship is open to undergraduates in any field for study. Preference is given to students studying abroad for one or both terms of the academic year, but the committee will consider summer programs as well.

Study Abroad in Iceland. This $3000 scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate students in any field.

Junior Year in Munich (JYM) Scholarship
This $2000 scholarship helps an undergraduate major or minor in our prorgram to participate in the Wayne State Junior Year in Munich (JYM) Program. The JYM Program also has scholarships, including some specifically for University of Minnesota Twin Cities students.

Max Kade Travel Grants for Study in Germany
Up to 4 travel grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to support our undergraduate majors who will be participating in a study program or internship in Germany. The program can be for the summer, fall semester, or the academic year (fall & spring).

Finnish Connection Scholarship

The Finnish Connection scholarship provides up to $1,000. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit to an undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts who is studying Finnish language and culture; some consideration will be given to financial need. Priority is given to students who have not previously received a scholarship from the department.

Interested students should review the application requirements for this scholarship.

Scandinavian Scholarships

The Department has up to two $3000 scholarships for students taking Scandinavian courses. One of these is reserved for a student of Swedish. Applicants must of completed at least a 1003 or higher course in FIN, NOR, or SWED.  The scholarships are merit based, with some consideration given to financial need.

Undergraduate Recognition Event

At the end of spring semester each year, we recognize our outstanding undergraduates, including our graduating seniors. Students of all levels and languages are nominated by their instructors and are invited to the recognition event, where awards are announced.

College of Liberal Arts Scholarships

The College of Liberal Arts offers scholarships for continuing students, currently enrolled in CLA. Each year, academically talented CLA students receive scholarships based on need or merit.

German Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen

The CLA Dean’s Scholar College in the Schools (CiS) German Award, is designated for a student who has been enrolled in the College in the Schools program. This is a four-year, $3,000/year tuition scholarship for an incoming student who intends to major in German. The scholarship is funded jointly by CLA, as CLA Dean's Scholarship, and by GSD. Application information is sent to CiS instructors in the fall.
