Drumline
The Drumline is a section of the University of Minnesota Marching Band. Our section consists of Snare Drums, Multi-Tenor Drums (6", 10", 12", 13", and 14"), Bass Drums, and Cymbals.
Students must be registered for MUS3480, Marching Band, which is a credited class. If you are not a University of Minnesota student but are from a neighboring college you can still join as an extension course by contacting the College of Continuing and Professional Studies.
On this page, students can find information on auditions, parking & directions, leadership and contacts, music (sheet music and audio), and frequently asked questions.

Audition Information has Changed
(updated on 2/20/26)
Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the 2026 University of Minnesota Marching Band for our 135th year of community, tradition, pride, family, and performance.
If you're interested in joining the Drumline and haven't contacted us yet, please email [email protected].
CHANGE - The Fall 2026 Drumline Auditions will be in the Marching Band facility at Huntington Bank Stadium on April 26 at 9 a.m. There is also an optional rehearsal at the same location on April 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Snare Drum players must be able to play Traditional Grip. If you're practicing for Multi-Tenor Drums, our five shell sizes are 6", 10", 12", 13", and 14". Information on Traditional Grip and other Drumming Basics is available under the resources section below.
Everyone will sign up for an audition time at 9:00 AM on audition day. People auditioning on Cymbals will demonstrate techniques, perform sight reading, and perform with small ensembles. People auditioning on Bass Drum will perform sight reading, demonstrate basic skills, perform a duet with a metronome, and perform in ensembles. People auditioning on Snare Drum and Multi-Tenors will perform Ski-U-Mah in solo and duet, and perform sight-reading.
Download "Ski-U-Mah" for Snare and Multi-Tenor Auditions.
Football season: Keep in mind when planning your Fall class schedule, the Drumline rehearses from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. every Wednesday night in addition to the regular Marching Band rehearsal schedule.
Audition Parking Directions
The entrance to the Marching Band facility is located under the "Pope" County marker in the Northeast corner of the stadium. Everyone who wants to audition must be present at 9:00 a.m. for a very brief informational meeting and to sign up for an audition time.
The best option for Campus Parking near the stadium is in the Maroon Lot. Otherwise, there are many options for travel and parking on audition day. If you don't mind walking about a mile, you can park for free on the streets of the Dinkytown neighborhood, less than a mile West of the stadium. If you're staying at a hotel, there may be Public Transportation Options that are more convenient. If you choose to walk to the stadium and don't want to be alone on campus, please call 612-624-WALK, and they can arrange for someone to accompany you.
If you are unable to join us for Auditions but are interested in performing in the Drumline, please contact Kelley Lima at [email protected] as soon as possible to make alternative audition plans.
If you have questions about Marching Band, or specifically about Drumline, you can visit our FAQ section below, the University of Minnesota Marching Band website, contact Kelley Lima and the Leaders, or email the marching band office at [email protected].

About 35-50 people audition for the 25 open spots on the line depending on the year. So about half of the people who audition will perform for the season. Those who are not selected are welcome and highly encouraged to return for Athletic Band auditions or any other ensemble program in the University of Minnesota's School of Music.
